U.S. Presidential Election: View from Abroad
Join IWF Chicago member Joyce Winnecke for a conversation exploring how the U.S. Presidential election is viewed from abroad. Her guests will be esteemed foreign journalists and scholars María Ramírez and Rick Dunham.
María Ramírez is director of Strategy and foreign affairs editor of eldiario.es for the U.S. election cycle. She covered every U.S. Presidential election between 2004 and 2016, first as a correspondent for the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and then as a senior political editor for Univision. Ms. Ramírez was Brussels correspondent and co-founded two news startups in Spain. She was a Nieman fellow at Harvard University; a Pritzker fellow at the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago; and a Fulbright scholar at Columbia University, where she graduated with a degree in journalism. Ms. Ramírez is author of several books on American and European politics. She is currently based in Oxford, England.
Rick Dunham is co-director of the Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University in Beijing and a visiting professor in the Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communication. He is the author of the textbook “Multimedia Reporting,” published globally by Springer, and co-editor of Springer’s Tsinghua Global Business Journalism book series. A veteran Washington journalist, White House correspondent and former president of the National Press Club, Mr. Dunham has covered every U.S. presidential election since 1980. Before joining the faculty at Tsinghua, where he teaches multimedia journalism, data journalism, advanced news writing and U.S. media culture, Mr. Dunham was Washington bureau chief of the Houston Chronicle and White House correspondent for Business Week magazine. Since arriving in China in 2013, Mr. Dunham has offered news analysis for news outlets from countries including the United States, China, Finland, the Philippines, Denmark, Estonia and Russia. He has trained professional journalists, journalism students and journalism educators in locations including the United States, China, Finland, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Lebanon and the Philippines.
Joyce Winnecke, a veteran journalist and media executive, works as a consultant and serves as President of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago board of directors. She has been Vice President and Executive Editor of the Chicago Tribune, President of Tribune Content Agency, Managing Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, and Washington correspondent for Scripps Howard News Service.
