Background on The Abby and Columbia Yacht Club:
The Abegweit (Abby) began service in 1947 as an icebreaking ferry, bringing passengers, autos, and railcars from the mainland to Prince Edward Island in Nova Scotia. She was purchased in 1982 to become the current Club Ship, retaining the name, which means Cradled on the Waves.
Founded in 1892 and named in honor of the Columbian Exposition, the history of Columbia Yacht Club is a mirror to the history of Chicago. Columbia Yacht Club opened its doors twenty years after the Chicago Fire to all who desired membership, without prejudice. Columbia welcomes all who have an interest in our life on the water. Whether you are dedicated to racing, committed to cruising, or simply looking for a way to enjoy the glory of Chicago’s lakefront, you’ll find other members who share your passion. Columbia has the unique distinction of having always been a floating yacht club.
