The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was passed by Congress in 2010 with only Democratic votes and its legality has been argued before the Supreme Court on three different occasions.  The Act transformed the individual insurance marketplace, led to Medicaid expansion in most states and also changed almost all group coverage through employers and unions.

The enhanced premium tax credits which were established by the 2021 American Rescue Act and continued through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 more than doubled the number of Americans covered on the individual market. The good news, more Americans than ever are covered by healthcare; and the bad news, it is an extremely expensive endeavor.  The slated expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits this year has resulted in a total stalemate in Congress and the longest federal government shutdown in history.

Join members of CFE and IWF Chicago for a conversation with Maura Carley and Eileen Wilson of Healthcare Navigation, both healthcare experts, for a discussion of the ACA’s history and the challenges faced by Americans due to our tumultuous healthcare policy environment and its uncertain future. The session will also explore how federal initiatives and policy updates over time have affected healthcare affordability and accessibility, as well as the ongoing challenges faced by individuals and families navigating insurance options today.
